FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

College Park, MD --American Studies at the University of Maryland is among the top five programs in the country for the second year in a row, according to a recent survey of faculty productivity. The only national ranking of American Studies programs has identified the University of Maryland’s program as fourth best in the United States. American Studies at UM is ranked behind only Yale, Michigan and Minnesota, and is ranked ahead of programs at George Washington, Brown, the University of Southern California and many others.
Called the 2006 Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index and produced by for-profit company Academic Analytics, this three-year-old ranking scheme compiled and analyzed measures of faculty productivity, such as books, articles and grants. According to Academic Analytics, the index ranks over 7,000 individual doctoral programs at 375 institutions.
"Our strong showing -- for the second consecutive year -- is the result of the efforts of both core and affiliate faculty, and we are grateful to them all," said Professor and Chair of American Studies Nancy L. Struna. “We also congratulate faculty, students and staff, and we hope everyone enjoys the moment!" she said.
The American Studies Department and Program at the University of Maryland is one of the oldest such programs in the United States, having operated continuously since 1945. For much of its history, the Program has been nationally recognized for its contributions to the field, which initially entwined history and literature. The Department offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees.
