McMurry, Sally Ann. Transforming Rural Life: Dairying Families and Agricultural
Change, 1820-1885, Revisiting Rural America. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University
Press, 1995.
This book is about the cultural, social, and economic changes that influenced and changed the landscape of Oneida County, New York. McMurry's feminist analysis offers a "bottom up" as well as a "top down" approach to viewing the subject as a result of the fortunate availability of primary and secondary historical resources. She is able to reconstruct the cultural history of agricultural and rural transformation in the transitional period between 1820 and 1885. This book shows how dairying communities reorganized themselves to survive in the emerging modern world. [K. Mackall]
