Schlereth, Thomas
J. "Past Cityscapes: Uses of Cartography in Urban History.” In Artifacts
of the American Past, 66-86, 1982.
Schlereth's article
is an introduction to the use of maps and other materials to assist scholars
concerned with researching cultural landscapes. The use of maps and prints
can be helpful in recovering spatial relationships that cannot often be discerned
from using traditional documentary resources, such as manuscripts. Varied
types of cartographical items -- topographical, geographical, transportation,
and fire insurance maps to name a few -- can generally assist a researcher in
uncovering the cultural layers of a certain area over time. [R. Schoeberlein]
