Prospective graduate students are encouraged to examine the M.A. and Ph.D. degree requirements, the Graduate School description of the program in American Studies, and the Department's research and scholarship pages to get a sense of the particular activities and interests of this program. Additionally, we encourage prospective students to visit campus to meet faculty appropriate to their interests and talk with graduate students about day-to-day life in the program. Please contact Claudia Rector at (301) 405-1355 or cr117@umail.umd.edu with questions about the graduate program or to arrange a campus visit.

Financial Support

American Studies has limited resources for financial support. Outstanding applicants will be nominated by the Department for fellowships. Additionally, the Department is often able to offer a limited number of teaching assistantships. Students who hold assistantships typically teach two sections of AMST 201, Introduction to American Studies, or AMST 205, Material Aspects of American Life. Teaching opportunities may also be available in the summer and winter session terms.

Visiting Campus

Prospective graduate students are encouraged to visit campus to meet faculty and fellow graduate students. A typical visit usually takes 1-2 days and is scheduled so that the student can attend classes, meet with faculty appropriate to his or her areas of interest, and spend some time exploring campus and talking with graduate students. Please contact Claudia Rector at (301)405-1355 or cr117@umail.umd.edu to arrange a campus visit.
